Every breakthrough in medicine and every new device invented starts with research. Doctors and researchers have an idea. Then, they expand it. They create scientific questions to investigate. Then, they do the research. Sometimes the research is paid for by the federal government like the Department of Defense, the National Institutes of Health, or the Veterans Administration. Sometimes the research is paid for by pharmaceutical companies. Most importantly, the study helps Veterans, and it is never conducted for profit.
So how does it work?
The doctors and scientists at the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care System need staff members, equipment, money, and support to conduct the research that promotes the health and well-being of Veterans (and the general public).
AVREF has a support staff of three who hire qualified research coordinators and laboratory staff, negotiate with sponsors and donors, monitor the progress of the research on behalf of the sponsors, and, generally, facilitate the administrative aspects of the investigation.
At the same time, we work with the researchers to share their research and educate the scientific community and the public about it. Sometimes we purchase equipment for the researchers. Occasionally, we pay for them to attend conferences. Sometimes, we work with them to publish their research. AVREF’s role is to help with everything but the science! We handle the finances, the legal issues, the human resource issues, and the educational needs of the research endeavors.
How can you help?
We need sponsors and donors to help with our mission! Whether you wish to sponsor a staff member or help us purchase equipment or contribute to our scientists, your donation is tax-deductible! More importantly, you can be proud of contributing to medical research that makes a difference for Veterans and the nation as a whole.
